Ottawa, March 1, 2013 – The public warning issued on February 25, 2013 has been updated to include additional Best Before date codes of the product.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Arla Foods Inc. are warning the public not to consume the Mauri brand Gorgonzola cheese, product of Italy, described below because the product may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product.

Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled. Consumption of food contaminated with these bacteria may cause listeriosis, a foodborne illness. Listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk. Infected pregnant women may experience only a mild, flu-like illness, however, infections during pregnancy can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn, or even stillbirth.

The importer, Arla Foods Inc., Concord, ON, is voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.

United Pet Group Inc., Voluntarily Withdraws “Ultra Blend Gourmet Food for Parakeets,” “ēCotrition Grains & Greens Nutritional Supplement for Parakeets,” “ēCotrition Grains & Greens Nutritional Supplement for Canaries and Finches,” and “ēCotrition Grains & Greens Nutritional Supplement for Cockatiels” Due to Possible Salmonella Contamination

These Products Were Distributed In The United States And Canada

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - February 27, 2013 – United Pet Group, Inc., announces that it has voluntarily withdrawn a limited quantity of the products “Ultra Blend Gourmet Food for Parakeets,” “ēCotrition Grains & Greens Nutritional Supplement for Parakeets,” “ēCotrition Grains & Greens Nutritional Supplement for Canaries and Finches,” and “ēCotrition Grains & Greens Nutritional Supplement for Cockatiels.” These products contain small quantities of dried parsley flakes supplied to United Pet Group by Specialty Commodities, Inc. On February 11, 2013, Specialty Commodities, Inc. initiated a voluntary product recall of parsley flakes distributed to United Pet Group and other pet food suppliers because the products may have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. Specialty Commodities, Inc. distributed the products to United Pet Group on May 30, 2012, and August 29, 2012. Above listed products were distributed throughout the USA and Canada between Oct 2012 and Feb 2013.

Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection withSalmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

United Pet Group, Inc., is voluntarily withdrawing the following specific lot numbers of its “Ultra Blend Gourmet Food for Parakeets,” “ēCotrition Grains & Greens Nutritional Supplement for Parakeets,” “ēCotrition Grains & Greens Nutritional Supplement for Canaries and Finches,” and “ēCotrition Grains & Greens Nutritional Supplement for Cockatiels” because of the recall initiated by for parsley by Specialty Commodities, Inc. The specific lot numbers/production codes subject to this notice are as follows:

No other United Pet Group, Inc., products are affected by this voluntary withdrawal. Customers who have purchased any of the products noted above are urged to dispose of them or return them for a full refund. Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there may be risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.

OTTAWA, October 18, 2012- The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning the public not to consume, sell or serve the food products described below because the products may be contaminated with Salmonella.

These recalls are part of an ongoing food safety investigation. This recall of peanut butter products in Canada is related to the expanding peanut butter product recall in the USA by Sunland Inc. due to possible Salmonella Bredeney contamination.

There have been no illnesses reported in Canada associated with the consumption of these peanut butter products. However, there are confirmed Salmonella Bredeneyillnesses in multiple states in the United States.

In young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems, salmonellosis may cause serious and sometimes deadly infections. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis.

The CFIA is working with the Canadian importers to remove the affected product from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.

Quebec, October 3, 2012 - MAPAQ, in collaboration with the company Boucherie WE Bégin inc. located at 500 rue Saint-Jean, Quebec, is warning the public not to consume the product described below and manufactured by the company because it may contain Listeria monocytogenes.

The company is voluntarily recalling the product and has agreed with MAPAQ to disseminate this warning as a precaution. However, it should be noted that no cases of illness associated with the consumption of this food have been reported to date to MAPAQ.

People who have this product in their possession are advised not to consume it. They must either return it to the institution where they bought it from or throw it away. Even if the product does not show evidence of tampering or smell spoiled, microbiological analyses revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes. Consumption of food contaminated with this bacteria may cause listeriosis, a foodborne illness that can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. Pregnant women and their unborn children, the elderly, children and people with weakened immune systems are considered the most vulnerable.
